Cuba is a country that many people hear about but few get to experience first-hand. Make A Difference in partnership with the First Presbyterian Church of New Haven organized a trip to this beautiful island for July of 2004 The group of people that went had the opportunity to share information and ideas and to build bridges of communication where there have been walls of separation. Because so little is known about Cuba here are some of the thigns the group learned. Healthcare is free, but because of the embargo there is no medicine. School is free, Cuba has the highest literacy rate of Central America. Internet and email is for educators and scientists only. Everyone else does not have access. You can only own a car if you have a good reason to. Food is distributed by ration cards. There are only 3 state run television stations with no commercials. It is illegal for Cubans to eat lobsters because they are only for tourists. If you kill a cow you get 20 years in prison, (Castro says you will have deprived 10 babies of milk and therefore that is worse than killing a person |
